ART 94124 Presents: Health Through Art

ART 94124 recently presented Health Through Art, an exhibit featuring billboards made by children, teens, adults, and elders speaking out through art against racism, violence and substance abuse. Health Through Art is an environmental community health advocacy project that began in 1989 to counteract the ubiquitous power of advertisers and the mass media to entice citizens into unhealthy attitudes and habits. The exhibit featured recent work from the project.

Also a heartfelt thanks to Adriana Diaz and Amanda Peterson for facilitating the studio art-making workshops. And of course thank you to folks that attended the exhibit and events.

Working Artist | Artist Working
A video installation and exhibit by ART 94124

ART 94124 was very pleased to have had our project proposal accepted to Art in Storefronts, a program that was launched by the Mayor's Office. The pilot program temporarily placed original art installations in vacant storefront windows located in the Tenderloin, Central Market Street, Lower 24th Street in the Mission, and Third Street right here in the Bayview.

Our project, Working Artist | Artist Working, was a video installation that was intended to celebrate a unique and often overlooked neighborhood truth—Bayview Hunters Point is a neighborhood with a particularly high density of artists either living or working within its boundaries. Featuring seven ART 94124 artists that live and/or work in BVHP, the videos were intended to draw attention to the process of an "artist working," and in particular a BVHP "working artist"—a nod to the creativity that exists right here in our 94124 neighborhood. Our Art in Strorefronts installation was accompanied by an exhibit at the ART 94124 GALLERY. The exhibit showcased artwork created by the artists featured in the video.

We want to extend our gratitude to the facilitators of the program—San Francisco Arts Commission, Triple Base Gallery, and the BBRC, and the Mayor's Office—and thank the people that came to see the installation and attended the accompanying events.

If you didn't get a chance to see the video installation and would like to, it will be on view at the Bayview Opera House for the month of February, in conjunction with their Black History Month festivities.

50 Bucks
ART 94124's One-Year Anniversary Benefit Exhibit

Well, somehow it's been one-year since a group of community residents and neighbors created ART 94124. Through the generosity of artists and collectors we were able to present 50 Bucks, ART 94124's One Year Anniversary Benefit Exhibit.

The pieces in this show were donated by the artists or collectors and were available via a silent auction for the exhibit's duration. All pieces, regardless of their true value, started with an opening bid of a very affordable $50 and all proceeds helped fund the ARTSFEST and future exhibits and events at ART 94124.

Thanks to those that donated and a special thanks to those that bought a piece. We are very grateful for your support.

ART 94124 GALLERY is pleased to have been the venue for the 6th Annual Altered Barbie Show. The exhibit,
Barbie and Ken’s Out of the Bag Carnival 2008, was a cultural identity show of recycled and reusable Barbie and Ken art; consider it Barbie and Ken’s celebration of conserving and reuse. Artists from around the San Francisco Bay resurrected Kens and Barbies and reinvented them into a wide range of recycled and re-usable Barbie art that included mixed-media, painting, printmaking, photography, quilts, fashion, poetry, and 3D Barbies, with video, performance and film! The eco-friendly visions and creations of over 80 artists were showcased.
